Located in the heart of Hell's Kitchen in NYC. "Braai" meaning Bbq is South Africa's favorite past-time. Being the Rainbow nation it has a melting pot of culinary influences from Native African to Dutch, English, French, Malaysian, Portuguese & Indian. Be transported to Safari in the City.

Braai (South African for barbeque) is Manhattans only contemporary South African restaurant and brandy bar. Showcasing game meats and a diverse spectrum of culinary influences (Malay, Portuguese, French, Dutch & German) that create the fabric of our rainbow cuisine. Set under a vaulted thatch ceiling and tree trunk lined walls, it brings a little piece of the bush & "braaivleis" to the concrete...

Diners with a "taste for adventure" mingle with "homesick expats" at this "different" Hell's Kitchen outpost specializing in South African barbecue; the "flavorful", "unique" eats (think ostrich and venison) arrive in a "hut"-like, "thatched-roof" setting that adds to the "novelty."

Braai, a South African BBQ and Grill, is not your run of the mill barbecue place. Although their menu includes traditional chicken and lamb dishes, it also features more exotic plates such as African lobster tails, ostrich meat, and grilled venison steaks.

Braai Restaurant Review

Hell’s Kitchen continues to push international boundaries with a trip to South Africa at the lovely Braai (the South African word for barbecue). Braai brings Manhattan a new twist on ’cue by introducing grilled game meats like ostrich and venison. A ruby-colored jar of the restaurant’s signature wine cocktail hints at some of the distinctive dishes to come. Order a plate of sambals, sauces...

South African barbecue in Hell's Kitchen at a restaurant styled to look like a bamboo hut.

Delicious food, terrible service!

Honestly, the food was amazing. The ostrich have sliders, empanadas, and eggplant and goat cheese rollatini were all delicious. I was blown away by all of it. The unfortunate part? Our waiter... He was a young, arrogant kid who didn't write anything down and as a result, messed up our order, forgot my drink, and then argued with us that he didn't mix it up. After my husband replayed the...

Food was good but as a South African I was disappointed in the South African dishes. If the menu didn't say babotie then I would never have guessed that it was babotie and the koeksisters were more a waffle. Atmosphere is great and the service was great.

Great Rainbow plate (5 tapas for $42) dinner for 2

I've been here three times and it's never disappointed. The first 2 times I went with friends because my girlfriend didn't seem to want to try it, but I finally got her to come, and she LOVED it. I can't speak for what she had but my Rum Punch was great, and then we split the Rainbow Plate w/Lamb Chops, Grilled Octopus, Truffle Mac N' Cheese, Deviled Livers, and the Portobello. Everything was...

Business description (3)

In fall of 2007, owners Brett Curtin, Tanya & Reshma Hira came up with the idea to open a home for South African wines in New York - Xai Xai, the first and only South African focused Winebar. This met with widespread enthusiasm and praise by the press and public alike, however, besides being captivated by the high quality and value in South African wines it became increasingly evident that...

Braai is a African, South African, and Grill restaurant where most Menuism users came for fun with friends and paid between $25 and $50.
