The Paramount Theatre is the home of the Oakland Ballet and the Oakland East Bay Symphony. It is the area's foremost facility for performing arts and is known for its grand music concerts, variety shows and movies. Constructed in the post-Depression period of 1931, the Paramount Theatre is best remembered for fusing various disciplines of arts together into a harmonious whole. The Paramount...
Designated a National Historic Landmark in 1977, The Paramount Theatre is one of the last remaining "Art Deco" movie palaces.
A glorious art-deco specimen, the Paramount operates as a venue for concerts and performances of all kinds, from the Oakland East Bay Symphony to Tom Waits and Elvis Costello. The popular monthly movie nights start off with a 30-minute Wurlitzer concert preceding classic films such as Casablanca. The docent-led tours here are fun and informative.
In Short
This 3,000-seat theater, built in 1931 and fully restored in 1973, is a beauty. One of the greatest examples of art-deco architecture in the U.S., the theater's countless mosaics...
Went to sea show play this past weekend and it was pretty good and funny I was pleased within the play itself, but the theater on the other hand is something else I couldn't hear clearly, I don't know if it's because I was sitting on the balcony or something else. I also got bit on my arm three times as well as my friend.
I have visited the Paramount for a variety of events over many years and it is still one of the most beautiful, clean and well maintained venues in the San Francisco Bay Area.
The only downsides are parking can be difficult and the restrooms are historic so they don't have enough stalls all the times and the dispensers still use...
A beautiful old time movie palace that shows you what it was like to see a film in the 20's. Do the Saturday a.m. tour if you can and you're into Art Deco or old movies. Check the schedule for Friday movie nights. Patrons often dress in the era of the film so good people watching and lots of fun.
Stepping into the Paramount is like stepping back in time. Over the years, I have had the pleasure of attending numerous events at this beautifully restored Art Deco movie palace. I have seen "Gone with the Wind" on the Paramount's movie screen. Listened to Max Raabe and the Palast Orchestra from the comfort of the theater's plush, velvet seats. Even...
When I entered the theater, the Art Deco atmosphere was enchanting. The organ music matched the atmosphere and the news and the cartoons before the main feature brought me back to my movie experience in Istanbul during my adolescense

Oakland's Paramount Theatre is one of the finest remaining examples of Art Deco design in the United States. It was designed by renowned San Francisco architect Timothy L. Pflueger and completed in late 1931. After its initial brief blaze of "movie palace" glory in the 1930's, this remarkable auditorium suffered three decades of neglect and decline until its rescue by the Oakland Symphony, the...
Will call is around the corner at a separate entrance on 21st Street.
The area surrounding this entertainment landmark is less than appealing. Skip the meters and shell out $5 for one of the many garages.
