Editorial reviews from the web (3)

"A knish is still a knish" at this "one-and-only" LES "legend", a "vestige" of the old neighborhood that has been dispensing "heavy, calorie-filled" Jewish "comfort food" for more than a century, notably "melt-in-your-mouth" knishes "of every variety", plus "great kugel and pickles" and "egg creams too"; aesthetics-wise it's on the "shabby"-"shoddy" side, and you can "forget about service", but...

This portal into the Lower East Side of yesteryear remains as it always was, on East Houston Street, This veritable temple of knishes, a knishery as it is popularly known, appears to have been serving knishes for seemingly forever. Kubrick fans: Didya notice the Yonah Schimmel façade recreated with a different store name in the movie "Eyes Wide Shut"?

For a meal or for dessert, you're bound to find a knish to your liking at this Lower East Side classic .

In Short
In 1910, a struggling young Bulgarian rabbi by the name of Yonah Schimmel opened this humble knish shop. Nearly a century later, his family still turns out some of the city's...

They’ve been in business since 1890 and it has been said that “No New York politician in the last 50 years has been elected to office without having at least one photograph showing him on the Lower East Side with a knish in his face.”  Yonah Schimmel himself was a Romanian immigrant who started his business with a pushcart before opening the bakery.  It is still family owned.

The best ever

I have been brought up on Yonah Schimmel knishes for 69 years. My parents introduced them in Coney Island in the 40's and to this day when we are back in NYC the priority is getting to Yonah and buying enough to take home (which is now in Arizona). We als

Best knishes

I lived my whole life (until 10 years ago) in NY, and was raised on gefilte fish, knishes, perogies, and all foods "Jewish, " so I KNOW. These are the best knishes in the entire universe. Now I live in NH and have them sent. What? You think they have knis

Whenever I am in NYC, I make a point to go to Yonah's. This place is amazing! It has old, historic acclaim and charm!

It's been around for over 100 years and the cramped inside corridor makes you feel like you stepped back in time to try an old world dish.

They have a wide variety of knishes stuffed with many different fillings from the classic potato to the more modern like jalapeno cheese....
