I hired The Ultimate Handyman to put in a ceiling fan. The ceiling fan came with a remote control which I wanted part of the install. I bought the ceiling fan from Home Depot for around $225. The minimum fee for the Ultimate Handyman is $100, so I knew the install price would be at least $100 – probably more. Byron came and installed the fan and I paid him $165. I thought the price was fair… but after he left the fan starting “coming on” or “shutting off” randomly. In the middle of the night it would pop on (there are 3, 60 watt bulbs in the fan, so when it pops on with lights blazing at 3am it is very startling.) It seemed to have a life of its own with no rhyme or reason why.
I called back The Ultimate Handyman and told them the trouble. I expected them to come back and fix it… when he did show up he expected another minimum fee of $100. He said he did install the fan. But I said clearly there is something wrong with the install, maybe the wiring was done incorrectly. In the end he said he could do several things, one would be to put the transmitter for the remote (embedded in the fan) on another channel. I asked him what would happen if that didn’t work. He said he would have to come back, and charge me yet another $100 minimum fee to address why. Another option was setting it up to be controlled from the wall by a switch. But even in doing that, if the remote was causing the trouble, I was not guaranteed the problem would be solved. I asked him if he had ever run into this problem and he said oh yes. It’s not uncommon. Well how much money do these people make charging “Minimum $100 fees” every time they step through the door to get a fan to work that should have worked the first time you paid them $165 to install it. And If it happens all the time, why haven’t they figured out a fix for this.
To make a long story short, there was going to be some “troubleshooting” as to why the fan was reacting this way. And each time he showed up it would be a minimum of $100, even if all he did was undo the fan canopy and switch the transmitter channel. I understand things can go wrong and troubleshooting is part of the process… I am also willing to pay for that, as nobody’s effort should go without compensation – but should that fee be $100 for every visit, for what could possibly be a lengthy ongoing process. Absolutely Not. If you think about it, it’s to Ultimate Handyman’s advantage to keep coming back.. if they can make $100 every time, why do anything “right” the first time. I told Byron to leave and will find somebody else to clean up what they have every incentive not to do correctly. I felt taken advantage of and would absolutely not recommend them. Thankfully, there are places like this where somebody like me can warn others.
The guy who came in was the owner himself, very nice and attentive to details. The price seemed high but I hired him because I didn't want to deal with multiple contractors. I expected a few months of work with one guy that knows-it-all and a helper. The day the job started, the guy I hired, brough in a crew with 2 electricians, 1 plumber, 2 carpenters and he ran the show from his mobile office outside ( laptop Computer, phone, internet access, printer and a Mobile shop on a box truck, looked like they were filming at my property. Really Impressive!). All was done in less than 3 weeks. The price was not the cheapest but worth every penny. I hope the contractor who left my job undone two months earlier could learn something from The Ultimate handyman.
NEVER USE ULTIMATE HANDYMAN IF YOU VALUE YOUR PROPERTY, TIME AND MONEY! The most dishonest company I have had the misfortune to contract. Incomplete, incompetent work, assembling furniture incorrectly (back to front which is clear to see) leading to unstable, dangerous, …
Byron was nice, knowledgable, and fast. The whole experience was awesome, doorbell hasn't worked in years now fixed.
I own a property management company. We had them out to a property to provide a bid. They provided the bid but it was not detailed enough to allow us to determine if the scope of work covered what we needed it to. When we asked them to clarify, they said they would have to charge $150.00. We …
