Don’t be misled by the neon sign marking the entrance to this old-world New York bistro. Unlike other subterranean spots, the dank, dark feel adds character to the underground wine den, which oozes class without any trace of pretension.…
Audrey Saunders' SoHo temple to the "science of haute cocktails" "lives up to its reputation" with a "can't-go-wrong" drink menu "cleverly concocted" by "experienced" hands behind the bar; nestled in a "swanky" upstairs space that transports you to a "former British colony", it's an "expensive" but "fantastic" place to socialize or take a "dressed-up date."
The original Club Pegu was a British officers' club in Rangoon, back in the days when the sun never set on the Empire. Hand-carved wood and understated paper lamps create a timeless world, and take us back to an era when cocktails were the emperors of the bar. But this is not just a gin house with great lighting; Club Pegu is at the heart of the cocktail revolution, a reaction against...
Mixologist Audrey Sanders' swanky club aims to re-create the look of a nineteenth-century British army officers club in Rangoon. The clientele is hardly ready for the great game, though, as late night Pegu Club teems with lithe bodies. Despite the chic crowd, the focus remains unapologetically on the art of the cocktail. Sanders is at the bleeding edge of the resurgence in updating recipes from...
Mixologist and co-owner Audrey Saunders, formerly of Bemelman’s Bar in the Carlyle Hotel, makes magic with cocktails. In 2005 she opened this upstairs downtown gathering spot where the creative cocktails change seasonally. It helps that the staff uses fresh squeezed juices, homemade ginger beer, and the largest assortment of bitters in town.
Super chill atmosphere, spaced out tables, and clean bathrooms. Drinks were expensive! The Grapefruit cooler was delicious and boozy. Very sweet. This...
High prices, of course. Very unique intimate ambiance, which is cool. Dark, like other speakeasies. Good energy and vibes, great for dates. Some people were...
Great champagne cocktails! Very nice bartenders
Really excellent cocktails and a great vibe... very intimate setting and enjoyed drinks with friends and work colleagues... My only complaint is that some people take the intimate setting a bit too far and are down each others throats in some of the booths... :-( I would take PDTs lead on this and make it a …

What to Drink: Try the Gin-Gin Mule, a mojito-like concoction of gin, house-made ginger beer, mint, and lime, cooled with huge ice cubes that won't water down. For non-gin-drinkers, Pegu's take on the classic Whisky Smash is a savory alternative.
Look Good: Pegu's expert mixologists prefer gin to vodka--and they've got more than a dozen varieties of the former in stock. If you want to stay in their good graces, don't order a vodka tonic.
Know Before You Go: Pegu is better suited for smaller, intimate groups--parties of 10 or more will likely not be seated.
The Extras: Drinks are the draw here, but patrons can also enjoy upscale bar snacks like smoked trout deviled eggs.
Fun Fact: Flip to the back of the leather bound menus to read up on the history behind the bar's name.
