"Justly beloved", this "boisterous" seafood "legend" in Grand Central stays "faithful to its 1913 origins" with "terrific" oysters and pan roasts that provide a taste of "true NY"; a "venerable" sublevel sprawl with a "dramatically" vaulted ceiling, "classic" dining counters and a "throwback" saloon, it's "not to be missed" even if it "costs a pretty penny."

Grand Central Oyster Bar & Restaurant Restaurant Review

Though Grand Central Terminal's refurbishment brings tourists to the station in droves to gaze at the exquisite ceiling, dine at one of the glitzy restaurants and shop at the chichi market, the Oyster Bar & Restaurant remains the best reason to miss your train. The vaulted ceiling is lined with Guastavino tiles and the huge room is noisy and bustling. The daily menu reflects the day's catch,...

Nestled deep in the belly of Grand Central Station, the Oyster Bar has been a worthy seafood destination since 1913. Sit at the counter for the fried oyster po'boy, or slurp an assortment of bracingly fresh oysters before having a steaming bowl of clam chowder washed down with an ice-cold brew. Or experience the forgotten pleasure of fresh, unadorned seafood such as lobster with drawn butter or...

After reenacting the baby pram scene on the stairs of Grand Central, slip into this gorgeous vaulted-ceiling space for a glamorous old school experience. Make sure you have a later train planned cos' you don't wanna be rushing. Bustling, with red checkered tablecloths and some cafeteria seating. Exquisite cocktails, more oysters than you can handle. Kick back, relax...if only cigars were still...

A New York classic for fresh, simply prepared seafood.

Delicious Seabass and lobster! We also loved the fried oyster appetizer! The server was very friendly and even brought over the lobster to The table. They also offered to de shell lobster for us!

My group and I enjoyed the food and atmosphere. We liked the the nostalgic feeling the place gives off. The bathrooms could use an update and cleaning. I don't expect graffiti and unpleasant conditions in a $$$ rated restaurant.

What a great meal! I ordered the grilled, whole bronzino. It had olive oil, capers and lemon on it and it was absolutely delicious! My husband had the oyster pan roast, a legendary dish! Our waiter, Jose, was professional, knowledgeable and pleasant. The wine list is very good. The place is beautiful, the ceiling tiles and lighting are great. We will definitely be back.

Jim was our waiter and he was fantastic. Great scallops, oysters, clam strips and New York cheesecake.

Tips about this business (4)

The Extras: The Guastavino Construction Company designed this laminated tile to create a vaulted effect in wide arches. For another example, visit Guastavino's--the restaurant wedged under the Queensboro Bridge.

When to Go: The restaurant becomes much more sedate in the evenings--a good time to go for more attentive, less rushed service.
