When the Empire Diner first appeared on the corner of 10th Avenue and West 22nd Street in Chelsea, it was 1946, the second World War was over, and a relieved country finally had its appetite back. That didn't stop the Art Deco landmark from being largely abandoned until 1976, though, when a group of restaurateurs took the unlikely underdog and turned it into a silvered lightning rod for the New...

Newly revamped art deco diner in Chelsea, where chef Amanda Freitag offers upgraded spins on classic dishes.

Empire Diner, Amanda Freitag's Revamp of the Retro Icon

Amanda Freitag opens her much-anticipated revamp of the iconic Empire Diner tonight. Besides The Highliner's brief run in the space a couple year ago, the diner has been closed since 2010. Now the design firm Groundswell has spiffed up the interior while sticking close to the retro 40s-era look of the original. Freitag's menu is also an improved version of diner classics, with dishes like a...

Retro diner vibe comes complete with stools, stainless steel, lots of ketchup bottles. 24/7 service drawing camera-toting tourists by day, Meatpacking clubbers by night. Classic diner fare— root beer floats, grilled cheese, rib-eyes. Upscaled ingredients and preparations, though, with...

A 24-hour classic in the old rail-car style serving the food you'd expect: eggs, blue-plate specials, sandwiches and hot fudge sundaes.

This late-night landmark--and one of the city's finest examples of deco-diner architecture--is a low-key, after-hours favorite with everyone from club-hoppers to drag queens to investment bankers....

Let me start from the beautiful interior of the diner, which is rather small but pretty cosy. From the outside you might think that you will enter an old diner, but once you enter the restaurant you will find a stylish and modern interior that...

I can't understand the good reviews regarding The Empire Diner . I went there mid week on a cold April morning to have breakfast and I couldn't believe how small the portions were on everything especially considering the high cost menu .
