"Still a classic", this 25-plus-year-old Chelsea "favorite" rolls out "serious" Northern Italian cuisine with "vibrant" flavors in a "simple" space where the white-tablecloth "elegance" is matched by "impeccable" service; "costly" tabs aside, it fits the bill for a "romantic" or otherwise "special" occasion.
Serving stellar Italian fare in the lower reaches of Chelsea since 1987, da Umberto serves up classic Tuscan cuisine with ingenious contemporary twists, all gilded by some of the friendliest service in the city.
Da Umberto Restaurant Review: This utterly Old-World Italian has been in business for just over a decade, but it feels like it's been here at least half a century. Italian is the preferred language at most tables in the bare-bones dining room, and many of the speakers are longtime regulars. Though outsiders may balk at the Old-World aura, the gracious host welcomes everyone with open arms. Da...
Simple, rustic Tuscan fare served without pretension in the heart of Chelsea. Go for the gorgonzola-rich polenta, or indulge in the house porterhouse, grilled for two. Wash it down with a pick from Umberto’s near epic wine list, and save room for the tiramisu–you won’t regret it. Ambiance is intimate, romantic. Hardwood floors, white washed walls, and bare décor place the focus on the food.

The pasta was under cooked and over seasoned (too salty by far). We all like our pasta al dente but this was closer to crunchy. I expect better from a restaurant of this caliber. And, waiter never came by to ask how the food was so there was no...
