At the southern tip of Battery Park stands an old fort called Castle Clinton National Monument. Built between 1808 and 1811 to defend New York Harbor, the circular fort eventually became the city’s first immigration center. Today Castle Clinton is the place to purchase tickets for the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island ferry, and a small museum exhibits the site’s storied history.

More than a dozen forts were built to defend New York Harbor at the time of the War of 1812. The Southwest Battery was constructed on the rocks off the tip of Manhattan Island between 1808 and 1811. Before embarking to see the famous Lady Liberty up close and personal, we bought our tickets at this symbolic monument. While the rest of the group was waiting in line, we explored this monument. Reading through the printed guide and the inscriptions placed on the wall, you could imagine that a decade ago this monument was the "lobby for New...

Small fort that was used for immigration prior to Ellis Island. Also where you get tickets for Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island tour.

This was an unexpected pleasure to visit. I love the architecture and the history of this space. Very simple displays you can check out that explain what went on here. Really interesting.

This is sad. Despite its historical value, Castle Clinton is nothing but a ferry booth for the Statue of Liberty and a restroom facility inside its fort walls. When I asked the park ranger if we could explore the Castle without the intent of buying a ferry ticket, he gave us a strange look. After going inside, we understood why...

You have to go in here to pick up your tickets for the Liberty Island boat. I mostly wanted to have a quick look around, as I recognised it from the game Deus Ex. It was pretty cool, but not a lof of information about it.

Business description (1)

Constructed to help defend New York Harbor, Castle Clinton National Monument has been many things-an opera house and theater, a restaurant, an immigrant landing depot and an aquarium. Today, programs and tours led by National Park Service Rangers as well as costumed interpreters help bring the history of Castle Clinton to visitors.
