Bread on Market Restaurant Review

For several years one certain Hillcrest bakery has dominated the San Diego bread scene, but now we have a true challenger to this incumbent---Bread on Market. We like these loaves (challah, potato-dill, raisin-walnut, rosemary boule, olive baton and more). Owned by Valerie Grover, this café serves sandwiches, soups, salads and sweets. We can't get enough of the focaccia bread---her own version...

The sandwiches are made with fresh bread they bake in house and the difference is quite significant! It is absolutely delectable. They get their espresso from a local coffeeshop called Java Jones which makes for a tasty addition!read full review »

Bakery with stale bread

We just purchased a condo nearby and were looking forward to this bakery, brasserie, nearby. We went for lunch and enjoyed the tomato basil soup and a pastry. We also bought a baguette, looking forward to a crunchy treat. Imagine our disappointment at biting into several days old bread.
Perhaps we were expecting too much, but, a bakery should NEVER sell stale bread as they did on this Tuesday.

Pros

+ friendly server, good soup

Cons

- Very stale bread

I love the breads and sandwiches. A must stop for lunch when you're in the area.

Business description (3)

When Susanna Starcevic moved back to her hometown, San Diego, she dreamed of offering Californians an artisan bakery like the one she owned previously in New York City. Susanna thought the time had come to make her dream a reality when the perfect location became available in San Diego's East Village. Her creation, BREAD ON MARKET, opened in the spring of 2003 and provides quality products,...

This bakery on Market Street provides a variety of baked goods and sandwiches. Closed on Sundays.

The baguettes at this artisanal bakery near the Petco Park baseball stadium are every bit as good as the ones you'd buy in Paris. Baguettes, focaccia, and other superior loaves are the building blocks for solid, sometimes creative sandwiches, which range from the simple goodness of Genoa salami and sweet butter, to a vegan sandwich that includes locally grown avocado. The menu extends to a...
