Help us make it rightEstablished in 1945, the Back Fence Bar is a Greenwich Village institution that stages a variety of live music every night. Cover charges vary, but remain reasonable. The website offers a listing of what's on every night. Grizzled staff are part of the charm at this saloon full of peanut shells covering the floor. Weekends can be packed, and waiting behind a velvet rope by the bar tends to get...
The Scene
With checkered tablecloths, sawdust-covered floors, a battered brown fence in back and a stage so small Anna Nicole couldn't fit on it, this Greenwich Village institution is the...
Very friendly - the staff are fabulous as is the live entertainment! We saw an excellent singer/ guitarist called Greg Aulden! The door staff really know what they're doing and do so with humour! We didn't eat there so I can't comment!
Ah so many good memories of this place over many years that we always find time to slip back and visit. Once we were the only ones dancing on the sawdust floor to the live music on a weekday night, but this time we were caught with a ridiculous 2 drink minimum when all we wanted was to drop in...
Seems strange to read some of the negative comments of others in here, as everytime I have been to New York, this has been the bar I MUST visit, and I have never had anything other than a great time in here. From the bar staff and waitresses, to the musical acts performing (with a very special nod to Ciro...
This is a great place if your looking for some live music and cheap drinks. It can get a bit crowded and cramped later in the night, and note that if you...
I have never been to such an awful place, there are so many fun bars in the area. Don't waste your time and money going here. There was a USD5 cover charge per person so that was fine, we ordered a drink at the bar and went and sat at a very small table. We were told we couldn't sit...

Back Fence Inc is located at 155 Bleecker St Frnt A in New York and has been in the business of Retail - Bar (drinking Places) since 1945.
Sandwiched in the very heart of the Greenwich Village music scene, The Back Fence has been an entertainment hot spot for 60 years! The Bar has three entertainers every night playing every style of music, a great atmosphere with lots of beer on tap and free peanuts that you shell on a sawdust covered floor.
“Stroll down nostalgia alley” at this sawdust-strewn Village “throwback” where “aging boomers” and NYU youngsters sing along with “great cover bands” performing on its “phone booth–size stage”; the “honky-tonk vibe” extends to the “gruff” service and “peanut shells on the floor.”
This village joint has been an eminent presence on Bleecker Street for the past sixty years, as any one of its seasoned bartenders will tell you. A definitive dive with loads of character, some of the neighbothood's historical greats have crossed its sawdust-strewn floor, enjoyed its free peanuts and swigged its excellent brew.
