Mexican mavens "all abuzz" over these "rough-and-ready" street-cart spin-offs call out their "outstanding", "Cali-inspired" tacos, tortas and burritos; "fabulous prices" and "fast service" offset the "simple" "hole-in-the-wall" settings; P.S. "make sure to get the ‘crack' sauce on anything you order."
Raising the bar for NYC Mexican. SoCal brothers behind the Calexico carts drop LES spot sans wheels. Taqueria serves up the original street fare plus burgers, fish tacos, daily specials. Tiled bar serves up a mean margarita. The main draw is the same as always, though: carne asada—marinated skirt steak, spiced and grilled—available in overstuffed burritos or soft-corn tacos.
Intimate, cozy sake bar and Japanese restaurant on the Lower East Side.
To enter Yopparai, you must climb the stoop of a Lower East Side tenement, press a buzzer and wait in the foyer until a pocket door skids open and a figure in black, behind a curtain of ropes, beckons. But this modest sake bar isn’t playing hard to get, just making the best of its awkward perch in a repurposed railroad apartment. No password is required — although a reservation helps, as there...
Stealth izakaya upstairs from 151. Owner is from Shinagawa City, chef’s a Tokyo export as well. Authentic feel in narrow, intimate space. Antique sake signs and sake ware for décor. Name means “drunk,” fifty varieties of rice wine stand by to get you there. Pair with Japanese pub grub: noodles, skewers, hearty chicken meatballs. No sushi rolls, but high-grade sashimi more than compensates....
simply outstanding small plates. Selection of the grilled items was extensive and prepared in a first-rate manner. Highly flavorful dishes - we had 9 and they are all excellent.
I have high expectation b4 I go. But the restaurant is very small. The 5 ppl next to us was very loud with their conversation. Im not sure they were drunk or NOT! The sake selection have a lot of choice but pretty pricey! This is a sake bar restaurant but NOT really for sushi or sashimi. OverAll, it's NOT too bad but NOT good neither!
Great food. Nice tiny place great for a date night other small group get together. Recommended.
I always enjoy Yopparai. My best Japanese place in Manhattan.
As someone from Japan, I prefer this type of dining rather than a sushi bar, which the pace is different and a bit fast for my regular dining preference. This is now a Michelin recommended restaurant (yet to be starred) and I'm not surprised at all.

Yopparai is an intimate Japanese sake bar and restaurant featuring a wide variety of sake along with traditional foods and snacks that pair well with sake. With high-quality ingredients selected daily by our chefs, Yopparai offers fresh sashimi, seasonal vegetables, and an assortment of fish and meats prepared on our open grill. With only 30 seats, we aim to bring a personal sake tasting...
Opening soon!
The short-lived and much-hyped hidden sushi spot, Sushi Uo, is being replaced by another Japanese spot, Yopparai. The menu will focus on yakitori and small plates like chicken meatballs (tsukune), beef rolled with scallions (negima), tomato salad, sashimi, and a large selection of sake.
