In Short
The first U.S. branch of the YMCA started in Boston in 1851; there are now more than 2,500 locations nationwide, making it the country's largest nonprofit community service...
A great gym is a fraternity of torment: Big men (and sometimes women) pushing their muscles and themselves to the max, to failure, to the brink of exhaustion. Its a place for camaraderie, for steroids (Caveat: I've never taken any myself...although I know a guy...), and for the triumph of a great lift. An awful gym …
A great community center in the Richmond District at 18th & Geary. Friendly people.
My bf and I have a membership here and I have to say, for the price and location it's pretty great (and did I mention they have parking!!!). The classes are good, the gym is clean and it has all the basics you need to work up a sweat :) And kudos to them for their friendly employees and the general positive impact they have on the community!
As a former employee, I would have to say that this is a great neighborhood YMCA. They offer child watch for your children, so that you can leave your children with staff members, as you enjoy your workout. Although the weight room is a bit small, this YMCA has does have a jacuzzi, and sauna. There is a lot going on at this YMCA, so be sure to check it out if you are in the area.
Great neighborhood fitness center. They have a limited amount of free parking spaces behind the building and across the street. Good staff.......especially Troy, he's the coolest membership director...
