What the community has to say about Woolworth Building

Information about this business (2)

We are located in the Woolworth Building directly across from City Hall and two blocks from Ground Zero. We are a local favorite for City Hall people, lawyers, and the developing Art and technology crowd in the building and the surrounding area. Despite our large size, people tell us they find the place warm and cozy! We also have Private Dinning! Diner Special - any salad, any entree, plus...

The Woolworth Building, at 233 Broadway, Manhattan, New York City, designed by architect Cass Gilbert and completed in 1913, is an early US skyscraper. The original site for the building was purchased by F. W. Woolworth and his real estate agent Edward J. Hogan by April 15, 1910, from the Trenor Luther Park Estate and other owners for $1.65 million. By January 18, 1911, Woolworth and Hogan had...

Editorial reviews from the web (1)

This soaring “Cathedral of Commerce” cost Frank W. Woolworth $14 million worth of nickels and dimes in 1913. Designed by Cass Gilbert, it was the world’s tallest edifice until 1930, when it was surpassed by the Chrysler Building. At its opening, President Woodrow Wilson pressed a button from the White House that illuminated the building’s 80,000 electric light bulbs. Called the “Mozart of...

Great Lobby Tour!

Average Rating

I took the 90 Min tour. It was great. The lobby is amazing! Great mosaics, stained glass, and details. The tour guide gave lots of history about lower Manhattan at the time and the context how this amazing building came to be built. A most interesting story and tour. You have to buy tickets online at WoolworthTours.com

Landmark skyscraper

You cannot go inside it and therefore can only look at it from the outside. Its an attractive skyscraper with a resemblance to European Gothic cathedrals and you can see it en route to the financial district. It quickly got overshadowed by the Empire State Building and Chrysler Building.

Beautiful to Look At

Average Rating

I actually only looked at this building from the outside, so maybe this "review" is not comprehensive, but really this building is just worth seeing. It is definitely one of the most beautiful classical skyscraper I've ever seen, and one of the most beautiful skyscrapers in general.
If you're a tourist in New York you will likely pass through this...

Being restored at the moment. Nothing special

The lower floors of the building are being restored at the moment. The building itself is nothing special compared to other buildings in New York. The best thing about this building was the Starbuck's on the ground floor.

Business description (2)

F. W. Woolworth funded this elaborate design on his own dime - and nickel.

The distinct two-tiered design of the 59-story Gothic revival Woolworth Building was the creation of architect Cass Gilbert. Built to house the headquarters of Frank W. Woolworth's retail business, at the time of its construction in 1913 it was the tallest building in the world. The roof is a mini-pyramid surrounded by flying buttresses, pinnacles and four small towers. Inside, the lobby...

Tips about this business (1)

Gargoyle-like caricatures of both Frank Woolwroth and Cass Gilbert adorn the lobby. Woolworth, who did not know of their construction, reportedly roared in approval upon his first glimpse.
