The food is OK here but nothing will really wow you. It cost $30 for 2 of us for lunch, which is reasonable and included the 4 pieces of Hamachi nigiri I ordered on the side. Comes with tea and miso soup which had a lot of green onion but no tofu.

Some of the best Japanese food around. Very authentic. Be sure to try the baked scallops and Joey's special roll. I love to go to Wakamatsu when I'm feeling beaten down. I ALWAYS leave feeling good. Wakamatsu is the only Japanese-owned restaurant in the area. (I only know others in Oakland or Newark.) No 'designer sushi' here. Just great Japanese food.

Of the 5 restaurants in downtown Hayward serving Japanese food, Wakamatsu is my favorite. It is a mom & pop shop where Joey, the sushi chef, greets you as you enter and Emiko takes your order. If you try out Wakamatsu, you`ll find a place that dishes up a Japanese fare where patrons tend to favor sushi. Expect the average entrée to cost roughly $8 to $12.
