Help us make it rightRight next door to Esther's Follies , its sibling act is a venue for local and visiting comics. Featuring all the elements of the stand-up comic's typical venue; dimly lit, crowded audience, bar, central stage; it has sustained the careers of many a local comedian for ages. In the past, it has showcased people such as the late, great comics Sam Kinison and Bill Hicks, both of whom began their...
The best laughs are the ones you get with your friends, and your night at the Velveeta Room will be a laugh riot! Enjoy stand-up at its best, and maybe join in on our notorious open-mike night, every Thursday at 10 p.m.! Enjoy a beer, laugh out loud, and see the very best in comedy for a memorable night out!
Most comics really aren't that funny, which is why you have to be drunk to enjoy them. It's less them and more of the atmosphere of letting loose and having fun. Since I don't enjoy sports like a good little mindless conformer Central Texas robot, I'd rather contribute to the livelihood of struggling artists who are developing their various crafts. It turns out many of the open mikers are musical or graphic artists as well. Austin is a good place to start developing comedy because it's not nearly as harsh or humiliating to get on stage as it would be on the East or West Coast. Some of the worst comics I've seen here. Some of the best in development I've also seen here. My preference is the Open Mic because I'd love to be able to say one day that I saw the next Bill Hicks before he was famous.
"You'll see first-timers at open-mike night, a big star who's in town or seasoned Austin comedy masters" all for just a $5 cover at this Downtown comedy club; the room is "tiny", the "drinks are stro-ong" and the comedy, well, it's "either randomly wonderful or predictably regrettable, and often a bit of both" – all of which make it "worth checking out."
For one-stop comedy consumption, go straight from Esther's to the Velveeta Room next door, a deliberately cheesy club serving more generic stand-up, local and national, as well as an open mic. Open-mic night is Thursday at 10pm; performances Friday and Saturday are 9:30 and 11pm.
Comedy club in the middle of Sixth Street lets comics deliver their schtick to an oft-sauced crowd.
$10 a person on Saturday at 9pm on 6th street, great price. 3 comedians who were all great. Headliner Chris Mata had everybody rolling laughing. Drink prices are cheap, entire staff was great and...
I should have known better when this place was less than 20% full on a sat night - WORST stand up comedy ever, painful. Bar service staff was super friendly. Very limited call bar selections. 6th...
We found this place advertized in the Austin Chronicle because they were having a comedy show the night we were in town. For $10 cover, we saw three comedians over an hour or so. The comedians were all great and the venue was small enough to really enjoy yourself. If I was living in Austin, I'd definitely keep my eye...
Hooray stand up comedy! Ive gone to this location for open mic nights and other shows and I will be coming back soon. The rooms are small and intimate which I think is perfect for when I go check...
For $10 a person we were able to see 3 comedians! The atmosphere was comfortable with the choice of small tables, booths, or bar. The ladies bathroom is extremely small and awkward so avoid it during peak times as the layout makes it almost impossible to wash your hands. My boyfriend bought the drinks so I do not know if...
