Editorial reviews from the web (4)

This "tiny" Little Italy Chinese churns out its signature "succulent" soup dumplings and other Shanghai treats "fast" and "dirt-cheap"; indeed, the "flavorful" eats distract from the "barking" service and inauspicious "fluorescent-light-and-Formica" setting.

Shanghai Cafe Restaurant Review

This popular spot on Mott Street isn’t the kind of big box dim sum establishment for which Chinatown is known. Instead, it’s more like a jewel box. So expect to wait, but you most likely won’t be disappointed. Any meal should start off with a round of the pork and crab dumplings. The Shanghai rice cakes --- silver dollar size --- are better than they sound (they come in savory stew-like sauce),...

The soup dumplings are the stars here but there are other gems also. Like the chicken pan fried noodles. Crispy noodles drench in sauce is filling and satisfying.

Crowds gather for the rich, savory flavors of Northern Chinese cuisine, in a bustling '80s-tinged atmosphere.

Chinatown aficionados know this relative newcomer for its exceptionally juicy soup dumplings, and the restaurant is pleasantly upbeat with its bright, pleasant, cafe atmosphere and robust menu....

My friend and I came here one night for dinner. We ordered two rounds of soup dumplings, scallion pancakes, lomein, rice cakes, and beer. The bill was less than $40 and we were so stuffed we took a cab back home to Brooklyn. It usually pretty crowded (I guess everyone else has discovered it too), but the service is fast and I've never waited longer than fifteen minutes for a table.

I spend too much time trying to decide where to spend my calorie count for the day, but based on the rating here, I decided that shanghai cafe deluxe would be my first stop in my 5 day Chinatown food adventure. Bear in mind that I traveled to NYC specifically for Asian food. . . All I can say is, Wow. What a HUGE disappointment. I posted some photos of what we ordered, but honestly, I've made...

Overall disappointing.

Delicious food, and it came so quickly! We ordered and had our food in under 10 minutes. I got the wonton soup (huge bowl of soup with 8 wontons), my husband got General Tso's, and we got steamed pork dumplings and spring rolls to share. Everything was delicious with the exception of the spring rolls which weren't anything special. Generous portions of all the food. We left stuffed, and it was...

I read somewhere (probably here) that Shanghai Cafe Deluxe serve excellent soup dumplings (siu long bao / xiao long bao). Since here in London there's virtually impossible to find a decent one, it was all I could do to stop myself from going every day...Forget the wontons in spicy sauce. They're lukewarm and doughy. The XLB, however - yes.

What to Drink: Tsingtao beer and a staggering array of smoothie and milkshake flavors (boba pearls optional) add to the cafe feel; no hard liquor is served.

The Extras: Unlike many Chinatown restaurants, tasty dessert choices abound like the warm, chewy moi-gee rice balls, generously dusted with peanut powder and oozing with molten sesame seed filling.
