Sited in the Brooklyn Museum but "much more than a museum restaurant", Saul Bolton's eponymous New American furnishes "creative" cooking backed by "warm" service; despite debate over the decor ("art-worthy" vs. "sterile"), it's a "nice splurge", with an informal sidekick, The Counter, offering cafe-style lunches and brunches.
Wonderful. Went on the last Friday night of restaurant week. The food was exquisite and so was our server Noy. The mind boggling part was the joint was near empty. Could not believe based on the quality of the food and the taste, that it wasn't packed to the rafters.
quite a surprise to find a museum restaurant opening about when the museum closes, but that how this works, although I gather it's also open for lunch while the museum is open. Friday lunchtime the restaurant was almost completely empty during the 2 hours I spent there. I ordered a Rose by glass, they were out of it. Same for the Sancerre. Considering they only carry one Rose and 7 white wines by glass, this should not happen. It should also not happen in a restaurant of Saul's caliber. The food is consistently excellent and they make great signature cocktails. The octopus appetizer is a favorite.
One doesn't expect refined food from a restaurant in a museum. Yet Saul is a place with beautiful food and beautiful plates. The service was pleasant and attentive. The quality of ingredients was very high and interesting combinations of those ingredients.
