The Oceanaire Seafood Room Restaurant Review

A boisterous crowd frequents Oceanaire, where a retro design exudes the feel of a 1930s-style oceanliner. The oyster selection is one of the best in town, and includes Malpeque (Prince Edward Island), Coromandel (New Zealand) and Bluepoint (New York). Classics like Chesapeake-style crab cakes or shrimp cocktail made with giant tiger shrimp are good starters. For entrées, we like the bold...

1930s art deco vibe combines with the freshest seafood imaginable to make for an elegantly hip night out. After cruising the oyster bar, browse 25 varieties of fish that's flown in daily, or opt for a creative seasonal dish by Top Chef alum Brian Malarkey, like sole stuffed with crab, shrimp and Brie. Thou shalt not exit the premises without sampling his phenomenal crab cake -- more thick,...

As you sweep up the dramatic staircase of the Oceanaire, the retro-nautical decor may evoke the grand elegance of a Titanic -style luxury liner. Don't worry, though -- the only iceberg ahead is of the lettuce variety. A Minneapolis-based chain that opened here in 2004, the popular Oceanaire features top local products as well as fish brought in daily from around the globe. Preparations...

With the look of a 1930’s cruise ship, The Oceanaire Seafood Room is a sleek, yet relaxed restaurant with style to spare. Its claim to fame is fresh, exquisitely prepared seafood, a boast that lives up to the hype. Buzzing with activity, social types converge at the oyster bar; those with more private agendas enjoy a romantic rendezvous in the high-backed leather booths. The oyster selection...

For an evening reminiscent of 1940's glamour and charm, dine on oysters and caviar paired with a glass of bubbly at this clubby, downtown spot.

In Short
Experience the glamour of a 1940's supperclub in a dining room that replicates a vintage cruise liner. The grand dining room gleams decadence with polished hardwoods and red...

We had a great meal at their restaurant in Boston, so we were excited to find they were in San Diego. The name was the only resemblance to our previous experience. The oysters were not properly chilled. The Shaved Romaine salad was a blob drenched...

Other then being seated at an undesirable table while the one we wanted sat empty for 1 1/2 hours.....we enjoyed the food and ambiance. Food delivery was a little “off” and the waiter acknowledged that but in in general Oceaniaire is a great restaurant but...

A group of six of us were walking Gaslamp and just happen to see an A shaped sign on the sidewalk which advertised oysters for $1 each on Sundays. Three in our group love oysters and the other thing was it was Sunday evening, so...

The Extras: Celebrity Chef Brian Malarkey (a Top Chef finalist in 2007) still runs the kitchen -- and works the room, even signing the occasional autograph.

Know Before You Go: If you don't plan on paying the price for valet, know that Gaslamp District parking is particularly difficult on evenings and weekends

Save Money: Happy hour is Monday through Friday from 5-6pm where guests enjoy several drink and menu item specials, including half price oysters.

Look Good: While there is a mix of casual chic to glitzy dressers, crowds trend towards fancier attire.

Save Time: Reservations are recommended at this popular dining destination.
