The short-story writer O. Henry had such a tremendous impact on American literature and culture that most people can retell one of his stories even if they can't identify the author. As mentioned earlier, he lived in Austin (1884-98), where he published a popular satirical newspaper called Rolling Stone. He also held down a string of jobs, including a stint as a teller at the First National...
"Fancy barbecue" is not an oxymoron. So shows this brother of the sister who owns the eminently popular Jo's Hot Coffee. Meats from the finest ranches and farms are the focus. Of course, scrumptious apps like deviled eggs and wild boar ribs will get you sated enough. The place looks like it was a dance hall in its former life, with wood-plank floors stretching on and on. Work off the...

My husband and I stopped by on a Friday afternoon. The house is quaint, and the guide there was very knowledgeable about the house and the author's history. If you are a literature buff or just someone looking for half an hour of free entertainment, you should check it out.
Not very tourist friendly! Not everyone who visits Austin closes the bars on Friday nite! Close to the Downtown train station if you're staying near the line.
My husband and I enjoyed a quick stop at the O. Henry Museum on our way out of Austin in December. (Note - another review here says they are closed on Sunday. As of December 2012, they were in fact open 12-5 Wed-Sun. We visited on a Sunday)
The museum is very small - maybe four rooms to view. But...
Was looking forward to learning more about one of my favorite authors. The museum is closed three days a week! We picked a closed day to visit. If we ever get back to Austin will stop by again.
This museum meets all my criteria for a little gem of a place.
- quirky, let's face it O Henry is one of those famous people you don't really know much about. Did you know he wrote his most well known stories from prison? And that he wanted to write novels but wrote shorts because he could crank them out...

A museum dedicated to the life of the famous short story writer William Sidney Porter, who wrote hundreds of short stories under the pen name O. Henry.
Pick up a brochure and map of sites central to Porter's life at the Austin Convention and Visitors Bureau.
Throw back a cold one at one of Porter's haunts, Scholz Garten, a bit of history itself.
The O. Henry Room at the Austin History Center holds the second-largest collection of Porter's works.
