A welcome respite from the fashion circus that is SoHo, McNally Jackson offers an impressive array of titles, beautiful stationary, and a corner cafe for weary shoppers. Open daily until 10pm (9pm on Sundays), come here to get recommendations from the lovely staff or to check out near-daily events and readings—including book clubs and kids storytime every Saturday.

This small and highly reputable chain of Canadian booksellers opened their only outpost in the United States to much fanfare in SoHo/NoLIta. Although the smallest of McNally's stores, with 7000 square feet it is quite spacious for an independent bookseller in New York City. With a charming café and fantastic staff, it is a pleasure to browse and buy here as well as to attend the many book...

The literarily inclined grab lattes and hit the books at this hip-yet-homey Nolita bookstore.

The bargains lie in the basement, but you'll shortchange yourself if you don't browse through the hip staffers' selection of must-reads on the first floor. Books on everything from architecture and...

My favorite bookstore in NYC. The cafe' is also more than amazing. Your staff is super friendly, they gave me some incre...dible book tips. During my time in NY I was an everyday customer since my hotel was just around the corner. In brief, I'm so glad I discovered this place, it was love at first sight. I will return very soon :).

Exceptionally helpful staff. I was visiting NYC but was just going to miss the Michael Cunningham reading and signing of... 'the Snow Queen'. They offered instantly to ask him to sign a copy and post it to London. A signed, dedicated copy arrived a week later. Places like this are so incredibly important. A very happy customer.

This is a beautiful store with a great collection of books. I adore whoever is in charge of their social media. Everyone I've encountered in-store has been kind of abrupt, but not to the point of disrespectful. Stationary and gift items are well-curated. Would love to attend an event here!

Wanted to avoid the herds of people that are frequently shopping at B&N so decided to come here. The store itself is pretty big - two stories (main level and one lower level). Everything is organized pretty well so things are relatively easy to find and you can flow from one section to the next if you're just browsing …

My favorite small independent bookstores were Crawford Doyle and Corner Bookstore, both very small on the Upper East Side. This is less overwhelming than the wonderful but cavernous Strand. It's absolutely beautiful and they do readings downstairs. Tonight I heard a Yale classmate who took Henry/William …
