What the community has to say about Harold's Barbecue

Information about this business (1)

A longtime favorite for barbecue, this simple down-home pork joint continues to attract the local lunch crowd and families looking for good, inexpensive eats. A classic barbecue shack, Harold's makes no attempt to provide gourmet comfort, but that's probably why the food is so good. The menu is also simple and features the basics. With your barbecue, try the Brunswick stew and the cracklin'...

It "smells like a smokehouse" and "you will too" after dining at this "iconic" Southside BBQ joint where the meats are "succulent" and the cornbread "will make your mouth water"; the "Early American slum" decor is trumped by "good prices", "prompt" service and excellent people-watching (think "political movers and shakers" and "law-enforcement" types on break from the Federal Penitentiary next...

THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Harold's Barbecue Restaurant Review

Begun by Harold Hembree in 1947, this stalwart of barbecue sits in the very shadow of the Atlanta Federal Penitentiary, once the abode of Al Capone, and draws a wide mix of loyal patrons, from suit types to law enforcement folks and jeans-clad hard-working people. The ribs don't impress us as much as the chopped barbecue sandwich. Whatever you order, make sure to have the Brunswick stew and the...

Squealing with smoky delight since 1947, Harold’s Barbecue is one of those institutions seemingly latched in a time capsule. Wood panelling, an ancient phone booth, an air conditioning unit packed with decades of dust bunnies. Harold’s operates with a don’t-go-changing attitude. That suits laborers, business types and various in-the-know locals just fine. Lunch remains hopping with pulled pork,...

The very definition of a barbecue joint, this hidden gem is well worth a trip from almost anywhere.

Southern barbecue doesn't come more no-frills, more real, or more spectacular than at this low-rent Meat Mecca in Atlanta.

Barbecue is great but you can make a meal out of a big bowl of their Brunswick Stew and Cracklin' Cornbread. Delish!

Business description (4)

Harold's Barbecue can be found at Mcdonough Blvd Se 171. The following is offered: Steak Houses. The entry is present with us since Sep 9, 2010 and was last updated on Nov 14, 2013. In Atlanta there are 38 other Steak Houses. An overview can be found here.

Harold`s is recommended by many native Atlantans as THE great escape for lunch when working downtown. Out past "The Ted", the new Turner (nee Olympic) Stadium, this barbecue is known throughout the South. (There`s a guy who lives in Alabama who considers Harold`s to be one of the ten best in the country, and says so on his web page.) Harold`s place is not big, it`s not fancy, but it is...

While Harold's neighborhood is not particularly scenic, those who frequent this no-frills, family-run joint say it's a diamond in the rough. Regulars devour tasty smoked meats slathered in flavorful red sauce, served with old-fashioned cornbread that melts in your mouth and other classic sides. Ribs and Brunswick stew are popular, too.

When to Go

Although the restaurant posts an 8pm closing time on weekdays, call ahead if it's close to 7pm and you're more than 15 minutes away. Doors often close at 7:30pm on the staff's whim.
