Editorial reviews from the web (2)

Though calling your hotel chain GEM could invite some harsh puns from reviewers, we're happy to report that this hotel left us smiling instead of scrambling for our thesaurus. Though, really, we can't walk away without playing on the name…

At this stylish, well-priced boutique hotel, the modern rooms are small but designed to make the most of limited space. And since you're in a handy location in Chelsea near some of New York's best art galleries, bars, and restaurants, you probably won't be spending much time in your room anyway. Clean and simple rooms offer great amenites for the price, including free Wi-Fi, a coffeemaker, and...

Great

This hotel is in a perfect spot, subway is close, the area is nice and quiet, restaurants everywhere, stores, landmarks close to it.The room was a lil but as small as people described it, I traveled with one 2 suitcases and it was fine. The people at the reception wEre super friendly specially the lady in the front, she was my favorite. Price was good. They had a coffee machine in the room,...

good location. microscopic room

the location is good. that is really the best part of this hotel. it is SO noisy you feel like you are sleeping in the middle of 8th ave. the windows are definitely not in anyway soundproof. towels and soap need an upgrade. the staff is minimal. you can't even walk between the wall and the end of the bed without squishing sideways.

Business trip to NYC

Very decent hotel in NYC at a reasonable price, which is different than many hotels in NYC, so that's why we used. Will do again in future possibly if going back to NYC for this area of the City on a business project.

it's a really SAD hotel: zero atmosphere and rude staff

I booked a room at this Hotel after a very good stay 5 years ago.The hotel has completely changed and it's not what it used to be. It is just SAD. I am not sure how else I could describe it, so I attached some pictures; check them out.STAFF: Both reception staff and bar staff treat customers more like an annoyance than a customer. At arrival we tried to be nice and break the ice but there was...

In search of a good night sleep? LOOK ELSEWHERE

Truly awful beds and pillows- both were lumpy and hard. I don’t look for too much in hotels, especially when I know I won’t be spending much time in the room, but this was an awful place to lay my head at night. The location is fantastic and a block from the subway, but that’s the only positive I have for this place. For what they charge per night, a decent mattress that is not that much to ask...

Though calling your hotel chain GEM could invite some harsh puns from reviewers, we're happy to report that this hotel left us smiling instead of scrambling for our thesaurus. Though, really, we can't walk away without playing on the name a little bit: while this is no sparkling diamond of a property, The GEM Hotel Chelsea is a solid ruby. It's got some depth and a bit of shine, and you can...
