Unplugged and proud.

The Scene
An acoustic player's paradise. All kinds of stringed instruments at all kinds of prices hang from the walls. Of course there are guitars (lap, bass, six- and twelve-string,...

Yelp

The Fifth String makes one consider the grim state of music in the United States in the twenty-first century and in Sacramento in particular. This is our -one- store in downtown/midtown? I always…

Yelp

This is THE place in Sacramento to find banjos, fiddles, and mandolins...oh my! There's a ton of good things to say about the 5th String Music Store: I have been buying my acoustic gear here for well…

An old hangout that I thought was gone!!

I used to hang out at the Fifth String in the early '80.s I took flatpicking from John Green. I think his bluegrass sensibilities were put off by the jumbo Guild I had. So, I bought a 73 D-45. I remember the look on his face when he saw the D-45. I'm sure he was thinking, "" Now there's an example of way too much guitar for that guy!!"" Someone told me that the Fifth String burned and was no longer in business. Boy am I glad you're still there!!!

Pros

+ Everything!!!

Cons

- It's in Sacramento...I'm in Beaumont, TEXAS!!!!!

Accoustic instruments and great teachers

Average Rating

These guys have one of the best repair techs in the area, and sell only high-end instruments. This store is not for everyone, but if you like accoustical music, this might be the place for you. They provide lessons in almost every style, from electric bass to mandolyn, and often you can listen to a improptue concert when musicans drop in to jam with each other.

only store in downtown

Average Rating

This is the only music store left in downtown. They seem to focus more on acoustic guitars than electric. The staff seemed annoyed that anyone would be in the store bothering them. Parking is horrendous. I wouldnt recommend this place at all, only if you are in the area and you really need something.

Keep Practicing

While you're playing your little 1-4-5 progression, one of the regulars is gonna be burning up the fretboard somewhere within earshot. Don't feel ashamed, these guys have been working hard for a long time.
