Amigos aver "you'll thank your stars you're in a border town" after a forkful of the "rich, subtle, flavorful" moles and "sophisticated, complex" entrees at this "high-end" Old Town Mexican located above a liquor store; an "astounding" selection of tequilas "adorns every square inch" of the "dimly lit" space, and while a few grouse about "slow" service, others praise the staff as "friendly and...

El Agave Restaurant Review

One of our favorite Mexican restaurants in a city known for them, El Agave differs from the rest due to its dedication to regional specialties and authentic ingredients. For those bored of enchiladas and tamales, El Agave serves a salad of nopales (cactus leaves), a refined yellow squash and leek soup, and six different types of moles. Of note are the pierna de cerdo en pistache (leg of pork...

If you're looking for bottomless baskets of chips and salsa and enchiladas swimming in cheese, look elsewhere. El Agave serves delicately and artistically prepared fine Mexican nouvelle cuisine (dinner for two will run upwards of $60). Ask for fresh corn tortillas for dipping with the rich and creamy Sopa de Cilantro, a fresh cilantro Mexico City soup. Moles are what they do best here—try the...

Nouvelle Mexican cuisine in Old Town made better than the rest with a sunset patio and serious tequila selection.

In Short
Situated in a charming hacienda at Old Town's edge, Agave is known for regional Mexican specialties and its collection of more than 1500 tequila bottles adorning the walls. For...

Interesting setting amidst thousands of bottles of tequila. Service was impeccable. Food was ok. The squash blossom soup was a fail but the waiter replaced it with the seafood soup right away. Sea bass was good. The tres leches cake was awesome.

Food and setting were both unusual and creative. Sit amidst the lined walls of 2,000 bottles of vintage tequila. Service professional as well. An upscale experience at reasonable prices considering everything.

First time to El Agave and we were pleasantly surprised. Seated immediately and on time with our reservation (recommended). The waiter was informative, pleasant, and attentive. The food we had (all mole's) was very, very good. This is as near a mexican fine dining restaurant as I've been to, and will definitely go back. Margarita's were simply outstanding - our party had 3 different (house,...

The atmosphere and food were great. The Mole sauces really added to the food. Top it off with a great waiter that explained everything to us since it was our first time at El Agave

Medallions w shrimp, sauce tasteless. Expensive Caesar salad was just long large leaves with slices of Parmesan and mayonnaise tasting dressing. Ceviche in large chunks, normally smaller size to eat w chips. Had sopecitos to try variety, disappointed.

Best of San Diego's Old Town: El Agave Tequileria is the hands-down winner for tequila selection, but they have fantastic authentic food as well. Their Mole Poblano Don Julio (chicken and rice covered with a complex, multi-faceted mole sauce) is amazing; Pescado Tikin-Xik (sea bass with achiote and wrapped in a banana leaf) is succulent and satisfying; Sopecitos de Camarón (blue masa stuffed...
