THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Chef Allen's Restaurant Review

Since the late 1980s, Allen Susser (one of four inventive "Mango Gang" chefs who put South Florida on the culinary map with New World cuisine) has operated his eponymous restaurant as a classic fine dining spot. But dining styles and tastes change. So congenial Susser has changed with them, completely modernizing both his physical space, from formal to hip open-architecture, and his menu. The...

If anyone deserves to have a restaurant named after him, it's Chef Allen Susser, winner of the esteemed James Beard Award for Best American Chef in the Southeast -- the Academy Award of cuisine -- and practically every other form of praise and honor awarded by the most discriminating palates. Chef Allen, the man, is royalty around here. Chef Allen's, the restaurant, is his province, and foodies...

Allen Susser has been providing South Florida with New World-inspired, progressive Florida fare for nearly 20 years, which is a long time in Miami years. While Allen’s steadfastly sticks to Floribbean dishes, always prepared with high-quality local ingredients, too many of them crowded onto most plates can make ordering tricky. Stick to items with simple descriptions, avoiding the heavy,...

You can't judge Allen Susser's groundbreaking Floribbean restaurant by its Plain Jane cover.

In Short
From the outside, chef/owner Allen Susser's restaurant looks less like a celebrated temple of local gastronomy and more like a mid-priced, touristy steakhouse. But the generic...

The food is always good at this chef-owned restaurant. Its hard to find the first time, but you will return again and again. On Friday or Saturday it can be so busy that the service sometimes slows ... but it gives you more time to savor the wine from a very good list.

We'll miss Chef Allen's. Wonderful memories of all the celebrations we had there.

Very Good Food and Service

Slightly out of the way location but worth the search. Food, decor, and service are all solid. My fish was well cooked but I would have liked more complexity in the sauce.

I was a bit dissapointed, I really wanted it to be excellent since it is in my neighborhood. The food was good but the decor is 80's outdated and the service is unfriendly.

This upscale restaurant focuses on and serves an American menu. Expect the average entrée to cost $20 to $30, and people are appropriate when dressed formal.

Atmosphere: The restaurant has a contemporary décor enhanced by artwork that might rival a gallery collection and flowers and plants. The restaurant has a contemporary atmosphere. Also, you`ll notice that there is a visible kitchen.

Know Before You Go

A nightly five-course tasting menu is offered for $75 per person; add $45 for wines paired with each course.

Where To Sit

Reserve "the chef's table" to sample Allen Susser's personalized tasting menu next to his legendary kitchen.

What To Drink

The wine tome (not "list") is expensive and extensive. Among its more intriguing selections is the 1998 Le Cigar Volante ($66), a blend of three red varietals that starts off tight but opens up to reveal a wine of great depth and complexity.
