Alex and Leyla moved from Baku, Azerbaijan to pursue life in sunny San Diego. Initially, Leyla only baked as a hobby. The idea for Café21 came after Alex asked Leyla to bake a plate of baklava for one of their friends who owned a restaurant. The baklava was so impressive, they were asked to continue baking more to sell at the restaurant. Soon, their home kitchen evolved into a full-blown,...

"Fresh ingredients" and "full flavors" make up the "well-priced" Californian–Middle Eastern meals at this Gaslamp–North Park duo, where "star" Azerbaijani owners helm a "friendly" staff that may "take a little time" but it's "only because they're making food from scratch"; a "pleasant" vibe and "interesting" decor help make it a "standout."

Don't take large group here

Reservation for large group made 3 weeks in advance. Plenty of warning for management. Absolutely the worst service I've had in years. The poor waiter didn't have a chance. Clearly terrible restaurant management.

We tried this spot because it had good ratings on Yelp. The food was bland the drinks were plain. We kept hoping for the best and order more food and drinks hoping they would taste better but unfortunately it didn't work out that way. We had 3 different mimosas and had no luck, they were flavorless just like the food....

Delicious breakfast

Enjoyed breakfast with friends here. We arrived just after opening, so we didn't have to wait. When we left (around 11) there were at least 8 people waiting for a table.
Menu is quite large and has good variety. A lot of nice twists on typical breakfast. We had their version of eggs benedict, a spinach omelette that was wrapped...

In the heart of San Diego’s über-hip Gaslamp District, Café 21 is a stand-out farm-to-table eatery. They offer many delicious starters, such as the Mixed Fries (avocado, portobello and eggplant, flash fried and served with dipping sauces); the Stuffed Flatbread is a must, packed with beef short ribs and served with a delectable dill aioli. We also recommend the sea...
