Barrio Cafe Restaurant Review

Chef Silvana Salcido Esparza, who co-owns Barrio with her partner Wendy Gruber, proves that Mexican food is much, much more than tacos and burritos (though her tacos and burritos are dynamite). Her menu, filled with exotic specialties from all over Mexico, includes cheese fondue from Oaxaca, mole from Puebla and a cochinita pibil (dry-rubbed and slow-roasted pig) from the Yucatan. Chunky...

Owners Wendy Gruber and Silvana Salcido Esparza have taken Mexican cuisine to a new level. Expect guacamole made to order at your table and modern Mexican specialties such as cochinita pibil, 12-hour slow-roasted pork with red achiote and sour orange, and chiles en Nogada, a delicious traditional dish from central Mexico featuring a spicy poblano pepper stuffed with fruit, chicken, and raisins....

"This ain't yo' mama's Taco Bell" crow fans of chef-owner Silvana Salcido Esparza's "upbeat", "funky", "colorful" Southern Mexican spot in Central Phoenix, where the "innovative, superbly prepared" "haute" meals come with "fantastic" guacamole prepared tableside, an "amazing selection of tequilas" (over 200), "delectable margaritas" and "warm, attentive" service; its location in a "somewhat...

The chefs at the Ritz-Carlton's Terminal Tower restaurant have made their dining experience more accessible than at Century, the hotel's previous offering, while retaining the requisite glamour. The white-linen Muse has the feel of a tony lounge, with wood-paneled walls, armchairs with upholstered backs, and a menu full of international twists on American classics, such as the brown sugar-and...

We should probably keep Barrio to ourselves, as it doesn't take reservations and the wait can push an hour on a Tuesday night. Thankfully, there's a wall full of tequila to help pass the time. The place is small, loud, and not in the nicest part of town, but it also happens to be one of the best Mexican restaurants in the entire Southwest. Prettiest dish: tilapia fillet rubbed with achiote (a...

Featured on DDD. I've been to her restaurants in Phoenix many times. Never disappoints. Table side guacamole is awesome. The French culinary twist on her food is unique. Parking can be a challenge but it's worth it. This isn't Tex Mex. This is real deal.
