Barbounia Restaurant Review

Beyond the heavy, oversize wooden doors is a Mediterranean oasis of sand-colored walls swathed in lustrous silky fabrics, lotus blossom-lit archways, and an elaborate chandelier made of feathers. The airy space, named for a red mullet fish, has an open kitchen and a sleek bar that invites you to see and be seen while sipping a mint julep made with rose flower essence. Among the appetizer...

"Stylish" and "upbeat", this "cacophonous" Flatiron Med lures "see-and-be-seen" "Gen-X" types with a "tasty", "something-for-everyone" menu (and one "crazy brunch"); still, it's the "beautiful", "airy" setting – replete with vaulted ceilings – that's the star of the show.

Splendid Mediterranean cuisine in the Flatiron District.

A popular Mediterranean resto in the Flatiron District.

A big, airy space with a pan-Mediterranean menu, Barbounia has found a niche for itself serving very fresh, unchallenging food to a crowd comprised mostly of Park Avenue South office workers. If...

Service was poor. She basically took forever to take our drink order. As well as food order. Drinks then took forever to come. Food came without silverware or small plates and we were sharing. The raw vegetables came about 15 minutes after the mezzes/appetizer spreads came - and I do not eat the bread. Basically unimpressed.

Barbounia never stops to amaze me whenever I go there. Notable dishes: Octopus, Potato Ginnochi, Duck Shawarma, Roasted beets and the Taboon lamb meatballs. One suggestion to the chef- try serving garlic shrimp in a different dish as that hot skillet overcooks the shrimp while being served. Keep up the great work!!!

I absolutely loved the food here. I enjoy the culinary experiences available in NYC. Being a native New Yorker I am very critical of where and what I eat. I was very pleasantly surprised with my find here. I had a casual business meeting set in the Union Square/Lower Midtown are I went on Opentable and searched out a moderately priced well reviewed place based on neutral cuisine. What...
