When I first heard the words "Cuban cuisine", I thought there was some underlying morbid joke going on; why would a restaurant claim to specialize in the cuisine of a country with a food shortage? But no no, friends, get past those dated references to Elian Gonzalez... Cuban cuisine is beautiful, hearty and distinct.

I've been eating at Andres Restaurant for over 15 years. As an American born Cuban I can tell you that their food is the most authentic you can find in San Diego. The menu is in English and Spanish to help first timers identify what the dishes are. The prices are very reasonable and the quality of the food and the service are hard to beat. I was brought to Andres, located in the outskirts of Old Town, for a goodbye party before a coworker returned to Peru and had some of the most unique and tasty food in the area. As far as I know, there are not too many places in San Diego that specialize in this type of food. I especially loved the plantains! The atmosphere is culturally representative and casual.

We went here because we saw they had a coupon in the Entertainment book. It was a unique experience and they have traditional Cuban cuisine -- black beans, fried plantains. I had the ropa vieja which is seasoned meat that is shredded like rags, then briefly cooked again.
