Founded in Oakland in 1970, the Aikido Institute (fondly referred to by Morihiro Saito Shihan as the "Oakurando Dojo") has been a center of aikido training in the Bay Area for over 40 years.
We practice "Iwama Style" aikido as taught by Saito Shihan, 9th dan, who lived and taught in Iwama until his passing in 2002. A number of instructors at the Aikido Institute have trained extensively with Saito Shihan both in Japan and at the numerous seminars Saito Shihan conducted throughout the world. I've been training here for 7 years. It's wonderful, and the people are great.
I trained here from 1990 to 1994 and it is a testament to the quality of Aikido and instruction that most of the teachers and several of the students continue to be here for the last 20+ years; and more since they were here many, many years before I started. Enduring and endearing people. There is no other dojo that I would recommend more highly.
