What the community has to say about Kossar's Bialys

Information about this business (2)

This little bakery on the Lower East Side is one of the best places for bialy (a Polish baked delight), not only in New York, but the entire country. Established in 1936, Kossar's has been delighting locals and visitors in the know with their famous bialys, bulkas, pletzels and other such creations. While starting off with just Polish bakery products, Kossar's also began offering bagels in...

The oldest bialy bakery in the United States, Kossar's Bialys has been handcrafting its bialys, bulkas, pletzels and sesame sticks for over 65 years. The process is a simple one, yet it is labor intensive. We use only the finest 100 lb bags of quality high gluten flour to our freshly ground onions, every aspect is hand made. We use an old-fashioned brick oven to give you that authentic flavor....

It doesn't get "better", "fresher" or "more authentic" for bagels, bulkas and bialys than at this circa-1935 Lower East Side "landmark", a "bare-bones" storefront turning out "superb" "old-country" carbs "baked daily" (they're "hot! hot! hot!") the way "bubbie's bubbie used to make"; here "nothing changes" and you "can't beat the prices", so "get down" to Grand Street and sample the "real...

You don’t need to know exactly what a bialy is to enjoy one, thank heavens. But since 1936 you can sample some of the best, hot baked local faves at Kossar’s Bialys. A dozen goes for around $11 and are sold in many tasty flavors like sesame, poppy, and garlic, as are the fresh bagels.

We know about their bialys, but don’t forget about their bagels. Also hand rolled, the result is a slightly crunchy exterior with a tender, moist middle. Sure, you came for the bialys, but you will leave with both.

These are the echt original bialys and absolutely worth the trek to get them fresh and hot.

The bagel's close cousin stars at this New York classic.

The place has a new owner and therefore new help.....they need to hire a baker who knows how to make a bialy...,there are 2 young guys running the place who are constantly "kibbitzing" ........ Obnoxious and inexperienced..,..too bad .... Kossars used to be a wonderful place,......don't waste your time and money.

As great as ever!Hadn't stopped by in years, I gather there'd been a dip in quality and then some new owners that got things back on track. All I know is, today's haul was fantastic.Bialys -- just right. Plain, but soft and chewy. The dough had the right texture, with just a bit of flavor. And then you get a little …
