I have been commuting to Evanston for the past 2 years to attend karate classes at the FMA dojo. They offer a variety of classes, catering to different ages, belt levels, or areas of karate (weapons, kumite, etc.) I especially appreciate their efforts to make all their members feel welcome through events like their annual banquet and Holiday party.

High quality and very approachable

FMA was the third karate dojo I tried upon moving to Chicago and it is by far the best. The owners are world champions and teach many of the classes themselves, and are assisted by strong instructors. The instruction is very high quality and complete in kihon, kumite and kata. The schedule is good and you can train six days a week if you have the time, for a flat monthly fee. I am in the adult program which is very strong, but I am also impressed with the kids program which has already produced national champions.

I recently came back to karate after many years out, and after several attempts to find a suitable dojo. Fonseca Martial Arts has pulled me in deep for two main reasons: 1) The quality of instruction from both John and Elisa Au Fonseca is world class, which is unsurprising given they are both heavily decorated athletes.
