NOTE: The Corcoran Gallery of Art will be closed for roof renovations from January 26 through March 13, 2009.
The city's first art museum, housed in an extravagant Beaux Arts building across from the White House, contains an encyclopedic assortment of American art, from portraits from the 18th century to modern works of the 20th century. It's not exclusively American, though, having benefited...

This elegant art museum, a stone's throw from the White House, is a favorite party site in the city, hosting everything from inaugural balls to wedding receptions.

The first art museum in Washington, the Corcoran Gallery opened in 1874 in the red-brick and brownstone building that now houses the Renwick Gallery. The collection outgrew its quarters and moved in 1897 to its present Beaux Arts...

We visited this beautiful building near the White House earlier this year because it is one of the few attractions in DC we had not seen and it was rumored to be closing soon to prepare for a transition of its collection to the National Gallery of Art. For a very short while only, this gallery is free, before it reopens (when?) under the auspices of the National Gallery of Art. See the original collection while you can. There are some iconic paintings here. Go.

This is a unique art gallery with an incredible collection that includes two Gilbert Stuart Washington portraits and stunning art from the 12th Century to the present. Since the Smithsonian has taken over there is no longer any admission fee. You have to hurry as the Corcoran is closing On October 1, 2014 for a three year rennovation.

History"I chose the Corcoran because of all the opportunities the faculty and location provide. As a photojournalism major, there's no better place to take photos, get internships, and make connections than D.C. I love this area and also wanted to go to a small school where I'm not just a number and where I can study with working professionals." The Corcoran Gallery of Art was formally founded...
