This mid-town theater has been a fixture of Baltimore's cinema scene since 1939- first as one of the city's many first-run movie houses and later as one of its few art houses. It has five screens, stadium style seating, and features major Hollywood releases, foreign and independent films. Along with the Senator Theater, The Charles is co-host of the annual Maryland Film Festival.

The Charles shows movies you don’t see elsewhere and for the most part I love the theater. However sometimes showings are too quiet and it’s hard to hear the dialogue. Also we just saw First Reformed which is filmed in 4:3 and they didn’t mask off the screen to fit. Otherwise, though, great theater. We also love Tapas next door and that we can bring sangria from there to the theater.
My love affair with the Charles began back in the early 80s. I remember the days of $20-10 showing coupon books good for double features. Those days are long past, but the charm of the place and the quality of the films that are presented there hasn’t changed a bit. Kudos to “The Chuck”!
