This place is a true southern original - perhaps the only hotel in the world where ducks live on the roof, ride the elevator to the main floor, and promptly march to the lobby fountain every day at 10a. Restored to its late 19th-century elegance, the Peabody is the heart that pumps Memphis social life. On any given weekend, you can sit in the lobby bar and watch people come and go from charity...

For years, The Peabody has enjoyed a reputation as one of the finest hotels in the South. While standard rooms aren't overly spacious or extraordinary, the public spaces dazzle. Marble columns, hand-carved and burnished woodwork, and ornate gilded plasterwork on the ceiling give the lobby the air of a palace. Its dominant feature is its Romanesque marble fountain. Here, the famous Peabody...

This 14-story Italian Renaissance Revival landmark has been the preeminent Memphis hotel since opening downtown in 1869. Renovations brought the indoor pool and athletic club into the 21st century, and the 464 guest rooms got a refresh in 2006. The menu at tony Chez Philippe is an Asian-inflected version of la cuisine Française. Marble pillars, hand-painted skylights, a charming bar, and a...

For decades the hotel's resident duckmaster has each morning directed five mallards from their rooftop Royal Duck Palace to the lobby, where they march along a red carpet to an Italian fountain to the tune of a John Philip Sousa march.…

There's no more elegant place in Memphis for a drink, but be sure you drop in well after the crowds -- who gather to watch the Peabody ducks do their daily march -- have dispersed, usually shortly after 5pm. Piano music is featured in the evenings. If you're a middle-aged or older traveler with refined tastes and an appreciation of historic, Old South charm, you'll feel right at home relaxing...

Stayed here with my son who was on a college tour of Rhodes College. Loved the character and history and especially the ducks. Turn off was the person checking me in who seemed to be reciting a script and really didn't answer my questions. We walked around outside the hotel and actually got a little scared as we were approached...
